Project Overview
Ontario Place is one of Toronto’s most recognizable waterfront destinations and is currently undergoing a significant multi-phase revitalization. The redevelopment includes new recreational, cultural, and public infrastructure designed to transform the site into a modern waterfront destination while preserving its connection to Ontario’s history and public realm.
As part of the ongoing redevelopment, Krcmar Surveyors was retained by Green Infrastructure Partners to provide survey support for approximately two kilometres of sheet pile installation. The project required precise construction layout, control verification, and as-built reporting services to support shoreline and infrastructure improvements throughout the site.

Why Krcmar Was Needed
The project required accurate survey control and construction layout to support the installation of sheet piling across a large and complex waterfront site. Krcmar was responsible for integrating the proposed sheet pile design with the existing site control network, calculating layout points, providing field staking, and delivering detailed as-built reporting throughout construction.
These services provided contractors and project partners with the information required to confidently proceed with installation while maintaining compliance with project design requirements.
Unique Project Challenges
The project involved approximately two kilometres of sheet pile installation, requiring extensive layout calculations and ongoing survey support as construction progressed. Layout points were calculated at six-metre intervals along straight sections of sheet piling and at every bend location to ensure accurate field installation.
As work advanced, unforeseen site conditions were encountered, including unknown underground structures and existing bridge infrastructure that conflicted with proposed pile locations. These conditions required additional survey investigations, documentation, and as-built reporting so that project partners could assess the impacts and develop solutions.
Keeping the survey calculations current as designs changed was another important challenge. As new design CAD files were issued, Krcmar had to continually verify that calculations, layout information, and project partners were all working from the most current design information.
Communication with the contractor was also critical due to the size and length of the site. Since progress in one area was not always visible from another, Krcmar relied on clear communication with the contractor to identify which areas were ready for as-built pile surveys and to ensure survey crews were attending the correct locations at the right time.
To maintain accuracy throughout construction, Krcmar also performed control adjustments and verification to ensure the project control network remained within acceptable tolerances.
Outcome
Krcmar Surveyors continues to provide survey support for the Ontario Place redevelopment, delivering construction layout, control verification, and as-built reporting services for a critical infrastructure component of the project.
Through accurate survey control, detailed reporting, and proactive identification of site conflicts, Krcmar has helped support efficient project execution while providing project stakeholders with the information needed to address unforeseen conditions and maintain construction progress.
This project demonstrates Krcmar’s ability to support large-scale public infrastructure projects through precise survey control, construction layout, and collaborative problem-solving within complex construction environments.
