Jack Layton Ferry Terminal

Client

Pomerleau Construction Company

Project Type

Transportation Infrastructure / Waterfront Redevelopment

Location

Toronto, Ontario

Date

July 2025

Project Overview

The Jack Layton Ferry Terminal serves as the primary gateway between Toronto’s waterfront and the Toronto Islands, accommodating millions of passengers each year. As part of an Infrastructure Ontario initiative, the terminal is undergoing significant upgrades to support the transition from diesel-powered ferries to a new electric ferry fleet.

Krcmar Surveyors was retained by Pomerleau Construction Company to provide survey control, construction layout, and ongoing survey support throughout the redevelopment. The project required the use of existing survey information from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal, along with newly established control points, to support the modernization of ferry docking infrastructure and associated facilities.

Why Krcmar Was Needed

The redevelopment required a reliable survey control framework to support construction layout for the ferry docks, charging infrastructure, foundations, walls, pile offsets, pile bracing, and micropile locations.

Krcmar re-established control from the previous Jack Layton Ferry Terminal survey, added new control points around the site, and tied in control points set by Pomerleau. All control was then adjusted using Krcmar’s in-house survey adjustment software to ensure accuracy and consistency across the project.

This control framework formed the foundation for subsequent layout activities, ensuring that new infrastructure could be positioned accurately and consistently throughout the project.

Unique Project Challenges

The project required ongoing coordination between Pomerleau Construction, consultants, and the design team as revisions and change orders were issued throughout construction. Krcmar reviewed plan revisions, updated CAD files, revised coordinate listings, and verified that design changes remained consistent with the established project control framework.

Survey support included positioning gridlines, charging house infrastructure, pile offsets, pile bracing, micropiles, foundations, and wall locations. As change orders were released, Krcmar continued to review revised plans and update layout information to ensure the construction team had current and accurate coordinate data.

Although the transition from the previous control network to the new project control did not create significant surveying challenges, it remained an important technical step. By tying new control into the previous survey framework and adjusting all control together, Krcmar helped ensure the project remained aligned to a consistent coordinate system.

Outcome

Krcmar Surveyors provided survey control, construction layout, CAD coordination, and ongoing construction support throughout the redevelopment of the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. By establishing and adjusting a reliable project control network, Krcmar helped provide the accuracy required to support layout for key ferry terminal infrastructure.

This project demonstrates Krcmar’s expertise in survey control, infrastructure redevelopment, and construction support within complex waterfront transportation environments.
