The ancient record of the Grand, or Great Inquest or Survey of the lands of England (1085-86) by order of William the Conqueror. The Domesday Book gives a census-like description of the realm, with the names of the proprietors, the nature, extent, value, liabilities, etc., of their properties. It was, in effect, a cadastral survey.
